The month of August celebrates National Breastfeeding Awareness Month around the world. The theme this 2017 is “Sustaining Together,” meaning it takes a community to support a mother to sustain breastfeeding and everyone has a role to play. The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) wants each member of the family to be involved in the process of breastfeeding throughout the Breastfeeding Week and Month. That would only mean that the mother’s success in breastfeeding is also the success of the family.
The point of celebrating Breastfeeding Awareness Month is for the benefits of the mother’s milk to the development of the newborn. Breastfeeding is very challenging at first so you really need your family to act as a support system.
Here are some of the important things to remember:
- Breastfeeding success is a family affair.
- Do not give up.
- You should know when to say when.
And here are the seven key benefits of breastfeeding according to Healthy Mom & Baby:
- More bonding
- Better brains
- Less diarrhea
- Fewer infections
- Reduced Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) risk
- Lower risk of cancer and osteoporosis
- Faster weight loss
Breastfeeding might be one of the hardest parts a woman encounters in the process of motherhood. But keep in mind the benefits of breastfeeding for you and your baby. Furthermore, the breastfeeding experience makes a huge difference with the support of your family.
